Helping Ottawa Residents Overcome Dental Anxiety
If trips to the dentist make you nervous or fearful, you’re not alone. Millions of people avoid dental visits because of negative past experiences or control issues. At Smyth Dental Centre, we understand your fear and provide simple solutions with sedation dentistry to help you get the care you need.
Sedation dentistry is the practice of using mild sedatives to induce total relaxation. At Smyth Dental Centre, we offer two methods of sedation– oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Our doctors will carefully examine your medical history and oral status to determine the method of sedation that is best for you.
Oral sedation involves taking an oral medication prior to your dental visit. You must have a friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment, as you will be very drowsy. The oral sedation will promote deep relaxation, yet you will remain conscious throughout your treatment. Oral sedation is great for patients who are fearful, need several procedures at once, or who have issues like neck pain or a sensitive gag reflex that prevent them from having a comfortable experience.
Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, provides immediate relief during minor dental treatments. Patients inhale laughing gas through a face mask. The effects of nitrous oxide subside once the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself to and from your dental appointment. Nitrous oxide makes it difficult for patients to recognize pain and promotes a tranquil mindset. If you have sensitive teeth or dental anxiety, nitrous oxide may be right for you.
Sedation dentistry has been safely used in dental medicine for decades. In fact, dentists have used nitrous oxide to relieve anxiety since the 1850’s. Our doctors have received training in oral sedation, and will carefully monitor your vital signs and comfort levels while you’re under sedation.
