Meet Our Dental Team

Edmund Merkley, BSc, DDS

Dr. Edmund Merkley was born in Perth, Ontario, Canada and raised in Smith Falls. He received his BSc from the University of Toronto in 1975 and went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Dentistry in 1979. Dr. Merkley has practiced dentistry at Smyth Dental Centre since 1985. He is a committed supporter of the Smyth Dental Centre partners, staff, and our ongoing mission to provide the very best dental care to the patients who entrust us with their wellbeing. His memberships include the Ottawa Dental Society, Ontario Dental Association, and Canadian Dental Association. Dr. Merkley is married with three grown children.

Michel Jean, BSc, DMD

Dr Michel Jean graduated in 2000 from Laval University in Quebec City. He joined the Smyth Dental Centre in 2003 after starting his career in his home town of Kapuskasing, Ontario. He his fluently bilingual and enjoys all aspects of dentistry, especially gaining the trust of nervous patients. An avid outdoors enthusiast, he enjoys running, cycling, and relishes time with his wife and children.

William H. Butterfield, BSc, DDS

Dr. Butterfield graduated from McGill University with a BSc in Microbiology in 1990 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1995. Dr. Butterfield is married with two children. In his spare time, he enjoys hockey, skiing, and golf.

Robert Beehler, BSc, DDS

Dr. Beehler grew up as the son of a Canadian Armed Forces jet fighter pilot. As a child, he lived in military communities in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Germany, British Columbia, and the province of Quebec. He attended McGill University, graduating in 1986 from dental school. Since that time, Dr. Beehler has practiced at Smyth Dental Centre.

Dr. Beehler enjoys many sports activities, including golf and hockey. He is an avid runner, completing his first marathon in 1978. Dr. Beehler is married with five children.
